Steel Gobos FAQ

What is a steel gobo?

A steel gobo is a thin piece of stainless steel with a custom design cut into it. When placed inside a lighting fixture, it works like a stencil — light passes through the cut-out areas to project your design onto a wall, floor, or backdrop.

How are steel gobos made?
Steel gobos are laser-cut from stainless steel sheets. The process removes sections of metal to form your artwork. Because the design must stay intact, small “bridges” of metal are added to support floating shapes, such as the centers of letters (A, O, D).
Why choose steel over glass gobos?
Steel gobos are more affordable, faster to produce, and extremely durable. They’re perfect for simple logos, monograms, and text-based designs. Glass gobos, by comparison, are better for detailed or full-color images but take longer to make.
What is the turnaround time for steel gobos?
Orders for steel gobos that are placed and receive proof approval by 3:00 PM Eastern (Monday–Friday) are typically produced and shipped the same day. Standard free shipping takes about 7–14 business days, and expedited shipping is available for tighter deadlines.

  • Visit www.progobo.com and select Shop from the menu.
  • Choose a template or upload your own artwork.
  • Select your gobo size — if unsure, leave your fixture model in the order notes.
  • Enter billing and shipping details.
  • Choose your preferred shipping speed. Complete payment securely by credit card. (We cannot take credit card
  • payments over the phone and do not accept PayPal.)
What artwork format should I use?

For best results, submit vector artwork files such as AI or EPS. These formats ensure your design is cut cleanly and precisely. High-resolution JPG or PNG files are also accepted but may require redrawing if the resolution is too low.

  • Recommended resolution: 1200 DPI at 60mm x 60mm.
  • Avoid low-resolution web images, as they appear pixelated and may require an artwork fee for redrawing.
What sizes are available for steel gobos?
ProGobo offers steel gobos in all standard sizes to fit popular lighting fixtures. If you’re unsure which size you need, simply include your fixture model in the order notes — the team will confirm the correct size before production.
How should I handle my steel gobo?
Always handle your gobo by the edges to avoid fingerprints and smudges. Oils from your hands can mark the metal surface and affect projection quality. Avoid bending the gobo, as even slight warping can distort your projected image.
How should I clean my steel gobo?
Use a soft, lint-free cloth (like a microfiber lens cloth) to gently remove dust and smudges. If needed, lightly dampen with isopropyl alcohol — never soak the gobo or use abrasive cleaners. Clean only when visibly dirty to prevent unnecessary handling.
How should I store my steel gobos?
Store gobos flat in a protective sleeve, envelope, or dedicated gobo case. Keep them in a cool, dry location to prevent moisture and heat damage. If you own multiple gobos, separate them with dividers to avoid scratches.

Can steel gobos be reused?
Yes. With proper care and handling, steel gobos can be reused for years. Their stainless-steel construction makes them ideal for DJs, touring productions, and venues that use gobos frequently.
Do steel gobos work in all fixtures?
Most professional and commercial fixtures accept steel gobos. However, sizes and holders vary by brand. Always confirm your fixture’s compatibility or include your model details when ordering to ensure the correct fit.
